Infertility affects about 10-15% of heterosexual couples, and is often caused by a combination of factors—problems with female ovulation, structural problems with the fallopian tubes or uterus, or poor sperm quality or motility. Fertility treatment can be emotionally and financially challenging, and many patients need multiple cycles before getting pregnant. Improving access and affordability requires incorporating fertility awareness into national sexuality education programmes, preventing and diagnosing STIs and promoting healthy lifestyles to reduce behavioural risk factors. It also requires addressing inequalities in access to ART and ensuring that third party reproduction and regulated ART are accessible without discrimination. In addition, promoting research and supporting policy dialogue to generate evidence to inform prevention, diagnosis and treatment is critical.
